The Research Environment at Upstate
Through a major initiative, SUNY Upstate Medical University is aiming for NCI-designation of its Cancer Center. The effort involves clinicians, basic researchers, health care administrators and professionals, who are organized into several University-wide committees.
Under multi-year plan of growth and expansion, Upstate is committed to attracting and retaining the best talent to contribute to translational research programs established at Upstate Cancer Center and to strengthening its existing core facilities to better serve the cancer research effort.

Upstate Medical University is the only academic medical center in Central New York and is the largest provider of the region’s health care for a 17-county region through its clinical system. Upstate is also the region's only medical school and has a graduate school dedicated to biomedical research. The Upstate Cancer Center opened in 2014 and the recent establishment of the basic and translational cancer research program paves the way toward formation of a attaining comprehensive cancer center designation. There is a significant NIH- and NCI- funding of cancer-focused research. Cancer Center Research faculty would be supported by Upstate's amenities, collegiality and facilities.
