WELL Certification

The WELL Building Standard is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that impact human health and wellbeing. This facility was designed from the ground up to promote and improve the wellbeing of all patients, employees and learners who enter, while still meeting the healthcare needs of the community we serve.

As a WELL Silver-certified facility, you’ll see and feel our commitment to improving the physical space and your experience in the Nappi Wellness Institute. The rating system includes these 10 areas of focus that affect your physical, mental and emotional health:

1 Air

Strategies to improve indoor air quality include source elimination or reduction, active and passive building design choices and operation strategies, and human behavior interventions. Simple examples include mats at entrances to capture dirt and dust that might otherwise pollute indoor air and a strict no-smoking policy. Highly visible no-smoking signage is posted throughout the Upstate campus, and this policy is enforced to minimize everyone’s exposure to tobacco and vape smoke.

2 Water

All users of the building should be able to prioritize their hydration with easy access to clean filtered water. Refill your bottle throughout the day and scan the QR code next to drinking water filters to get up to date information on the drinking water quality.

3 Nourishment

The Nappi Wellness Institute supports healthy and sustainable eating patterns by increasing access to fruits and vegetables and limiting highly processed foods in our cafe and vending machines. All nutritional information and allergy information is provided so that staff, patients and visitors can make informed choices. In addition, we’ve specifically designed environments such as our staff lounges with dedicated space to support mindful eating.

4 Light

The common areas of our space are open and filled with natural light. Research supports natural light can improve mood, reduce stress, and correlate to fewer illnesses. All exam rooms and shared-work areas have dimmable lights to help with visual acuity.

5 Movement

The WELL Movement concept promotes physical activity in everyday life through environmental design, policies and programs to ensure that movement opportunities are integrated into the fabric of our culture, buildings and communities. Take the stairs! Our staircases are labelled with your step counts to help you keep track of how you move, complete with Two more attractive with lively colors and light and safe with rubberized flooring.

6 Thermal Comfort

New construction means the newest smart HVAC system design and controls to help keep all patients, staff and visitors comfortable throughout the building and in every Central New York season.

7 Sound

Our shared spaces and private rooms alike are designed and constructed to keep “noise” out and conversations easy for a calming experience for all.

8 Materials

This building was crafted with thoughtful materials intended to reduce human exposure to harsh chemicals that could negatively impact your health and wellness throughout the construction process and current operation of the building.

9 Mind

The programs and policies of our practices, along with the thoughtful design of the building prioritize the mental health of the people who walk through our doors.

10 Community

Upstate is proud to serve every member of our community in every building on our campus and in the surrounding region. We embrace diversity and inclusion to state that all are welcome here. The providers and staff in the Nappi Wellness Institute understand our patients’ needs beyond their physical and mental health, and can provide connections to additional support services in our community. In some cases, we’ve been able to bring those services to our patients, with partnerships with the Food Bank of CNY and the CNY Diaper Bank.
