RESEARCH ABSTRACT

My research includes studies of the role of microRNA in the progression of acute myeloid leukemia. We are using Nextgen sequencing to profile microRNA from patients with AML or with myeloproliferative disorders that can progress to AML. We have discovered a group of microRNAs that are increased or decreased in patients with AML compared to normal controls. We are continuing to profile patients after induction chemotherapy to determine if the microRNA profile can predict relapse. We are also studying the effects of changes in microRNA expression on cultured leukemic cell lines. This project will lead to better understanding of the targets of the microRNAs and may lead to development of new therapeutics for AML.
